History of Campus Rugged Country:

In 1922, Samuel S. Kaufman and Loren Bertram Weber opened a sweater jobbing office called the Pontiac Knitting Mills in Cleveland, Ohio.

Weber, incidentally was born in 1895, in Zanesville, Ohio.  (His father was Austrian, his mother was born in the U.S.)  In 1917, at the time he registered for the draft, he was employed by the Erie Something Company (handwriting on draft card illegible – starts with D.)  In 1921 he married Dorothy Schlesinger.  Samuel S. Kaufman was born in 1898, in Bellefoutaine, Ohio.  In 1928 he married Helene Mansbach in New York City.  (Mansbach, born in 1905, was a member of the 1924 graduating class of Cherry Lawn School, which, founded in 1915, was one of the first co-ed boarding schools in the country.)*

By 1926, Pontiac Knitting Mills had been renamed Campus Sweater Company, and it went on to become one of the nation’s largest manufacturer of men’s casual clothing.  In 1968 Campus was acquired by a company that was then known as Interco, based in St. Louis.  Originally named International Shoe Company, it was formed by the merger of Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Company and Peters Shoe Company in 1911.  “Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Company, a footwear jobber based in St. Louis, was established by Jackson Johnson, Oscar Johnson, Edgar E. Rand and John C. Roberts in 1898, while Peters Shoe Company, a manufacturer and wholesaler of footwear, was promoted by Henry W. Peters in 1836”  (Data Monitor Business Information Center: Furniture Brands International Inc: Company Profile, May 2007.)  In 1953 ISC acquired Florsheim Shoe Co., a Chicago-based shoe manufacturer founded in 1892, by Milton Florsheim, son of a shoemaker (Encyclopedia of Chicago).

Following the purchase of other retail and apparel companies in the 1960’s, ISC’s name changed to Interco to reflect this diversification.  Other acquisitions included:

  • P.N. Hirsch and Company, an operator of junior department stores in the Midwest (1964)
  • Cowden Manufacturing Company of Lexington, Kentucky, a manufacturer of men’s and boy’s clothing (1964)
  • Central Hardware Company (1966)
  • Shainberg Stores (1967)
  • Fine’s Men’s Shops (1969)
  • The Biltwell Company (1969)
  • Eagle Family Discount Stores (1970)
  • Golde’s Department Stores (1971)
  • Big Yank Corporation (1972)
  • Standard Sportswear (1972)
  • Devon Apparel (1974)
  • United Shirt Distributors (1974)
  • College-Town (1974)
  • Sidney Gould (1975)
  • Queen Casuals (1976)
  • Londontown Corporation (1976)
  • Stuffed Shirt/Stuffed Jeans (1976)
  • Sky City Stores (1977)
  • International Hat Company (1978)
  • Albert’s (1978)

While Campus had become a division of Interco, they still retained some of their autonomy. “Weber and Kaufman retained the titles of chairman and president, respectively, of Campus Sweater. The Campus trademark was first filed Dec. 8, 1970.  By the early 1970s the company had grown to include 18 plants and 5,000 employees. There was a New York office, 5 plants in PA, and 13 in the South, including a main distribution center in Chester, SC. Both Kaufman and Weber retired in the mid-1970s. By 1978 the company had outlets or factories in 19 cities and accounts with most of the major department stores in the country” (Encyclopedia of Cleveland History).  Weber died in 1978 in Shaker Heights, Cuyahoga, Ohio.  The Rugged Country trademark was filed shortly after, on March 20, 1978.  Samuel Kaufman died in 1980 in Cleveland.  In 1982 the Cleveland headquarters was closed, its functions absorbed by the New York and Chester locations.  Kaufman’s wife Helene died in 1988.

In the 1980s, Interco branched out into the furniture business with the acquisitions of Ethan Allen and Broyhill.  In the late 80s and early 90s, they sold off many of their operating companies, and entered bankruptcy in 1991.  “By 1992, INTERCO had four primary operating companies: Florsheim and Converse in footwear manufacturing, and Broyhill and Lane in furniture manufacturing. The company later decided to focus on the furniture business and distributed all of its interest in Florsheim and Converse to its shareholders in 1994, ending nearly 160 years in the footwear manufacturing business” (Data Monitor).  In 1995 they changed their name to Furniture Brands International to reflect their focus on, well, furniture.  Thus the tale of this many-tentacled clothing and shoe hydra came to an end.
