What’s in a label? The Genealogy of BKE67

History of BKE67:

According to the FTC’s registration number database, BKE67 is manufactured by WOR International Inc.  I managed to find precious little on Wor International, besides the fact that their president is Hsu Wei Wang, they’ve been known to import from Keelung, China, and they’re in the wholesale apparel industry.  However, after paging through tens of Google pages for things made by BKE67 that people are selling secondhand, I finally realized the sellers kept mentioning “The Buckle.”  Lightbulb!  Duh.  The Buckle is a chain of 400 or so clothing stores, and lookit their logo:

Look familiar?  I get the picture.  Their website helpfully explains who they are:

The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE: BKE) is a leading retailer of medium to better–priced casual apparel, footwear and accessories for fashion–conscious young men and women. The Company currently operates over 400 stores in 41 states, under the names Buckle and The Buckle.

Buckle markets a wide selection of brand names and private label casual apparel, including denims, other casual bottoms, tops, sportswear, outerwear, accessories and footwear. The Company emphasizes personalized attention to its guests (customers) and provides individual customer services such as free alterations, layaways, and a frequent shopper program.

And even gives their history!

Buckle began as a men’s clothing store in 1948 in Kearney, Nebraska. The first store was founded by David Hirschfeld and operated under the name “Mills Clothing”. His son Dan took over the operations in 1965 and has been a leader in the company since. In 1967 a second store was purchased and operated under the name “Brass Buckle”. At that point the company began selling more casual men’s clothing and by the early 1970’s Brass Buckle had developed into a denim based store. In 1977 the company introduced women’s apparel and has since evolved into the store you shop today. Brass Buckle changed its’ name in 1991 to The Buckle and in 1992 the company went public on the NASDAQ and traded as BKLE. In 1997 The Buckle moved to the New York Stock Exchange where it now trades under the symbol BKE.

Trades under the symbol BKE.  And I call myself a librarian, jeesh.  I shoulda checked there first.  How did I miss them?  In March of last year, Forbes called The Buckle “recession-proof.”  And yet another lightbulb moment!  The 67 part of BKE67 must be the year Buckle became part of their name.

Kearney of Kearney, Nebraska, incidentally, was named after the nearby Ft. Kearny, which was itself named after Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny, a United States Army officer who served in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, and ended his career as the governor of California.  Ft. Kearney served as a waystation for pioneers seeking sojourn on their way to California and Oregon.  In the late 1870’s, Kearney residents in a fit of optimism raised funds to erect a cotton mill, possibly the namesake of Mills Clothing, founded about 150 years later.  Mills Clothing obviously did much better than the mill itself, which barely lasted a decade.
