What’s in a label? The Genealogy of Authentic Western ATB

History of Authentic Western ATB:

Have you ever started researching something, thinking you’d be lucky to find enough for a two-sentence summary, only to discover there’s enough data out there to write a dissertation?  Authentic Western ATB is one of those.  For a long time I thought the label read “Authentic Western A+B,” so using that as my search terms I wasn’t able to find anything in the trademark database.  But on a whim I typed in “Authentic Western” and lo and behold there it was, and that + was a T.  From there I began poking around for CR Anthony, and thus hit the jackpot.

August 10, 1885 – Charles Ross Anthony was born near Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee to Zachary Cicero Anthony and Elvira Ann Pennington Anthony.  His father died in 1903 when CR was 8, and his mother died at some point after 1894 (Ancestry.com).  Most biographies refer to CR as an “orphan of Tennessee farmers.”

As a young man, CR began his career in retail by working for the JC Penney Company.

1918 – CR partnered with J.P. Martin to form the Martin Company.

1922 – CR liquidates his shares in the Martin Company

September 1, 1922 – CR opens his own store named in Cushing, OK named the Dixie Store.

1926 – The C.R. Anthony Company incorporates.

1947 – CR changes the name of his stores to “Anthony’s”

1972 – C.R. Anthony Company commemorates its 50th anniversary, with 325 stores.

1972 – CR retires and his son, Guy Anthony, takes over as president.

1972-1980 – Guy serves as president.

1980 – C.R. Anthony Company files a trademark application for ATB

1986 – CR’s grandson Robert “Bob” Anthony becomes the company’s 3rd president.

1988 – Bob runs for his first elected office

1991 – The company files for bankruptcy.

1997 – Stage Stores buys out the Anthony stores, ending a 75-year legacy.

Long story short, I wasn’t able to figure out what ATB stood for.

  • Great stuff, I love your blog…
My mother’s family is from Shawnee Oklahoma, in the 1930’s and 1940’s my grandmother was a cashier for “C.R.”, eventually rising to head cashier. I recall, not too fondly as we always HAD to shop there, that Anthony’s was always a couple years behind the trends. In the late 1960’s when my brother and I lived there for several years and corduroy pants were popular, Anthony’s had only the wide cords, which were definitely not cool… The store’s manager, whom my grandmother never tired of telling us she had trained, had children about our age and a cabin at the Lake as we did so we saw a lot of Shawnee’s Anthony family. Today that end of town, which was the commercial center of Pott. Co., is like a mausoleum, a ghost town, a tribute to WalMart and the Interstate…

    • Thanks for your comments, Robert! I’m actually from San Jose, myself, so it’s nice to see someone from home 🙂
Glad you like the blog. I love hearing personal stories and accounts that really bring the history of a piece of clothing alive. I see from your Ebay store that you’re fan of things both western and hippie? As am I! My years at SJSU made a Deadhead out of me, and as you can see, I’m obsessed with cowboy shirts. And here’s an interesting tidbit, I just found out the other day that James Cash Penney employed Sam Walton in 1940, and then Sam went on to found Walmart in 1962. It’s a small world after all! Take care and hope to see you around.

  • Elizabeth says:

As the great-granddaughter of C.R. Anthony, let me solve the mystery for you. ATB stands for Anthony’s Tops and Bottoms. It was the in-house brand label for clothing made exclusively for C.R. Anthony stores.

And your timeline for the Company is missing an important date. In 1987, Anthonys was sold to Citibank Venture Capital. Citibank was running things when the company filed for Chapter 11 Reorganization in 1991 and later sold the company to Stage Stores.
